Question:

: We rececently added a second Jrt to our family and couldn't be more thrilled. He is 12 weeks at this point, and has already learned the joys of sleeping in bed with my husband, myself, and our 2 year old JRT. However, we also have 2 sons, 13 and 11, who we would like the dogs to be able to sleep with also. The new puppy refuses to sleep in the room with our younger son,(He will sleep with the older son if given a choice) and there is no apparent reason why. Should we try crating the puppy in his room for awhile, so he gets used to being there? This has quickly become a sensitive issue with our son feeling rejected by the new puppy.

Response:

Hi Theresa,

My guess the reason your new pup is not wanting to sleep with your son is that it feels very comfortable in your bed with you, your husband, and your other JRT. It probably feels that this is his "pack" especially because there is another dog in the bed.

I would suggest perhaps allowing both dogs in your son's bed for now, or at the very least gating off his room and letting the pup sleep with him. The only other thing I can think of why this pup doesn't want to sleep with your younger son is maybe your son is one of those real bad sleepers that thrash around a lot in his sleep or constantly is tossing and turning. Believe me, when I have one of those nights, my terriers leave in disgust lol!

Regards,
Marie
